Delaney is 1

20151121-Burke-026What a year, what a year! Our baby girl is 1 and we can hardly believe it. The time goes so fast but is also so full that it feels like she’s been with us forever. Delaney is the sweetest thing and becoming mom is all the more exciting and fulfilling because she is who she is (though, I’m sure every mom says that?).

Before this year and this sweet girl came into our lives, Jordan and I spent so much time talking about what we thought our baby would be like. We’ve joked about the qualities we dread a child getting from each of us (notably, my stress/anxiety/tantrum qualities for obvious reasons and Jordan’s ho-humness and/or IwontdoitifImnotgoodatit-ness), who the baby will look like, how the baby will resemble each of it, and most importantly, “will the baby be funny?!”. The answer to the final question became clear early on. Delaney is FUNNY and the three of us really do seem to get along really well (obviously, she can’t talk, but whatever). We chase her around, we tickle her, she hides from us (or our stuff from us), and she has started to throw her head back and mouth wide open saying “AHH hahaha”. She’s just the best and we really can’t believe how affectionate, fun, sweet, focused, beautiful, stubborn, shy, and fearless she can be all at once.

At one year old, here’s what’s new!

  • Delaney weighs 19 lbs and 11 oz (47%) and is 30 inches tall (71%).
  • She runs fast! She doesn’t crawl still but has learned to stand up from sitting. Game changer.
  • She STARTED SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT. One week before her birthday…the gift of all gifts.
  • Eats more food and can suck down the baby food pouches all by herself
  • She got hand, foot, mouth just before halloween — it was very sad
  • We traveled to Austin TX for a wedding — a 4-hour trip that ended up taking us 16 hours! There was flooding and we were rerouted to Houston, where we rented a car and drove through flood waters. It was terrifying but our baby girl was a trooper and she absolutely loved Austin once we got there.
  • She was an Oompa Loopa for her first halloween and partook in the North End Halloween parade with all her buddies.
  • Started Daycare and starting to LOVE IT. It was a rough start but she’s doing much better every day. She cries when we leave and interestingly enough, screams when we arrive! I think it’s the confusion of seeing us and wondering if we’re going to leave again?
  • Dances by holding on to something nearby and bouncing with her bum out. It was hilarious and cute.
  • Wiggles her head and whole body in response to me saying, “Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!”
  • Gets very focused on putting things away or on an activity like drumming
  • Loves stuffed animals and will give them hugs and kisses
  • Kisses goodbye with her hand to her mouth, waves bye and says “ba!”
  • Shakes her head “no” while saying “Ba” (her version of no).

Delaney at 9 Months!

IMG_6343We’re approaching toddler-dom with Miss Delaney is seems. She is growing like a weed and is embarking on some new tricks that make it feel more and more like we don’t have a baby anymore:( I love seeing her grow into her own spunky, crazy little person but really can’t believe she’s getting so big so fast.

The past month has been so much fun and we are finally getting some rest at night (wahoo!!). Here’s what our little lady has been doing this month.

  • Walking with assistance…all day, every single day. She’s in the zone when she’s walking and honestly, just whines when she isn’t. I know people say that once they walk your life is over, but mine already is because I’m either holding her hands while she walks around or trying to get her to stop whining while she’s sitting so….I’m kind of OK with her starting to walk.
  • No crawling.
  • Eats FOOD! Really. Actual food. It’s incredible.
  • Coughs before she sneezes every time. She’s done this forever but I just realized I’ve never documented it and I want to remember because it’s hilarious.
  • Can get onto all fours from sitting but usually flattens out and can’t get back up.
  • Can cruise on furniture if you put her there. Still can’t fully herself up without a little bit of effort from the other side.
  • Still only has two teeth but she’s been crying and drooling and rubbing her gums for the last three weeks as though she’s JUST ABOUT to get her top teeth and maybe a few more.
  • Loves the pool
  • When you hold one hand while she’s standing, she bends over to pick anything and everything up. She doesn’t understand that she needs to bend her knees so it resembles the bend and snap from Legally Blonde.
  • She is starting to show some separation anxiety…but it really only impacts me because she’s just whiny when I’m around but totally fine when I’m not. I’ll take it.
  • She has a full blown mullet and no longer likes the bath, mostly because she HATES getting her hair washed (you and me both sister).

She’s so much fun and I love being with her. We’ve had some great vacations and she’s certainly lived well for her first summer.

Delaney at 6 Months!

IMG_1601Another month, another update. So far, I think six months is my favorite. Delaney is doing great! Over the last month, it’s finally been nice out consistently and has made our days even more entertaining.

Six months stats: 27.5″ height (95%!!!) and 17.5lbs (72%)

The fact that Delaney is tall is hilarious. She also works really hard at keeping up with her baby friends who are mostly all three months older than her, so I often forget how young she is. Here are some facts about the past month:

  • We went to Disney World! She loved it and I’m so glad we got to have so much time with my family – and Delaney’s cousins. It was H O T and Delaney was the sweatiest but she loved it and it pushed all of us to stress a little less about sleep schedules.
  • She KIND OF started sleeping at night. We did 10 days of cry it out (sleep training blah blah) and while everyone claimed that this would be instant, Delaney doesn’t back down easily with basically anything. She screamed for a full two hours multiple nights in a row…so another post dedicated to that soon for people who care.
  • She spins on her stomach…no rolling just spinning. She will do anything to avoid rolling.
  • She “eats” solid food. Ok, she doesn’t actually eat anything but we waste food that she’s slobbered on and smashed in her hair once a day:)
  • She laughs at ME now, not just Jordan!
  • Loves Peek-A-Boo with herself in the mirror

Most everything else is the same and I love every little bit of her. She’s the best.

Delaney at 5 Months!

Delaney five monthsWe’ve got a noisy baby! In the past month, Delaney has found her voice and isn’t afraid to use it. For the most part, it’s been adorable and she hasn’t been abusing her newfound vocal chords (aside from the middle of the night, but who’s keeping track?).

She is becoming more and more of a person and has one of the best personalities. She’s an extremist when it comes to her emotions, which isn’t too surprising considering her parents. She’s either very loud or very quiet. There’s isn’t too much in between when it comes to Delaney’s mood and her state changes on a dime so she keeps us on our toes.

This month, Delaney has:

  • Started to laugh, really laugh mostly at Jordan and things he does. The boxing is the best and I’ll have to dedicate an entire post to it because it’s so good.
  • Sits up for real now. She still crashes and burns but she sits unassisted for a minute or so at a time, or as long as she isn’t trying to grab something far away.
  • She loves her bedroom and is outwardly relieved when we take her in there for naps and bedtime. She is so ON all the time when she’s not sleeping that when she’s tired, she’s REALLY tired.
  • Her favorite book is Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes, which we read before sleep every day. She laughs at certain parts and looks up at you when you start to read. It’s the cutest thing.
  • She falls asleep great still but doesn’t stay sleep at night anymore…wakes up a million times but whatever, nobody wants to hear about that.
  • She SQUEEEEALS and it’s hilarious
  • Her hair is still in tact, longer and curlier than ever before

Delaney at 4 Months!

Delaney Four monthsThis little girl has changed so much over the past month and somehow, continues to entertain me despite being with me 24 hours a day. I really never thought I’d enjoy the newborn or “baby baby” phase of motherhood but she is just the best. Delaney’s animated, cracks a wry smile, has a ton of energy, and still amazes me at how patient she can be in our marathon-long days out. Obviously, she has her ups and downs (and despite my best efforts, I still find that I complain of my exhaustion far too much) but I love her so much and are feeling more than ever that she is ours and we are hers.

At four months, Delaney:

  • Loves to stand and sits really well with minimal support
  • Has lots of little baby friends (many of whom are 3 months older, which lends itself to hours of awe)
  • Started using the “jumper” or “exersaucer” probably a little too early but entertains herself for a while
  • Doesn’t freak out during tummy time but also doesn’t flip over as often as she did before
  • Has LOTS of curly, unruly, adorable hair – so far, none has fallen out and we can now use clip on bows, which is just about the cutest thing ever
  • Loves the bath
  • Holds the bottle and wants to put everything in her mouth (about that time for us to baby proof our apt at least a little bit)
  • Traveled for her 4th and 5th flight to Florida for five days with Phyllis, Bubbie, and Poppy. Loved the warmth but lots of baby sweating.
  • Swam for the first time and loved it!
  • Takes naps in the crib or out and about
  • Has a habit of holding my hand/fingers while she’s falling asleep, which is really cute but one that I’m trying to break (but don’t want to forget)
  • Put her foot in her mouth for the first time
  • Finally back in the stroller after 8 weeks of the bjorn due to a record breaking winter

These are just some of the highlights…more for memories than actual entertainment:)

Delaney at 3 Months

IMG_4450The past month has brought on some much needed and appreciated consistency in our lives but also a TON OF SNOW. I feel like we’re getting to know Delaney so much better and her personality is just the best. She smiles when we get her from her crib, loves loves loves music, loves other babies, wiggles around on her play mat and is starting to bat at toys, and is pretty consistently sleeping 10 hours a night (waking up once to eat).

She ditched rolling over and pretty much just hangs out on her stomach now until she’s mad…so that’s been a treat:)

We have MASTERED the bjorn. After some traumatic attempts to get Delaney out in the stroller, I pulled out the Bjorn and it has SAVED OUR LIVES. We get out of the house every day even if just for an hour to walk around CVS. We are still in a Mommy and Me class in the South End, so we take the train regularly and it’s been awesome. I feel so much less trapped now that I feel comfortable taking her anywhere and everywhere in the snow. Knock on wood, I haven’t fallen on the ice yet.

The most I can remember about this month is snow…so I really think that’s all that happened. Lots and lots of snow.

Delaney at 1 Month

Delaney at one monthDelaney is one of the very best babies! We are still in some catch up mode on this blog (already, I know). But I want to document some of our highlights, low lights, and little quirks that in a day or two from now I will probably forget!

Delaney is calm and sweet so much of the time. So far, the most difficult part of it all has been nursing. I’ve been struggling with an infection that makes feeding the baby extremely painful, to say the least.

Fun Facts during the first month:

  • We hosted Thanksgiving at a week old with my parents, Shannon and Kristin in Boston. Jordan made Turkey, my Mom made a few sides, I made mashed potatoes and it was the perfect meal! Delaney wore her Thanksgiving outfit, we face timed with the Burke Thanksgiving in the evening, and took a walk to the Marriott for coffee.
  • Our first family lunch was at Panera Bread at 10 days old
  • We often call her Baby Laney
  • We started dancing with her to We Will Rock You early in the morning when we hang out with her in bed. She opens her mouth and we THINK she’s trying to smile (Update: this proves to be true as she starts actually smiling to the same thing weeks later).
  • She thrashes and snorts when I get ready to feed her. Nobody understands how strong these babies can be but Delaney flails her arms like a maniac so I need Jordan’s help to feed her for the first two weeks.
  • She lost a pound 5 days after birth and proceeded to gain 5 oz back in 24 hours.
  • Her legs are always in indian style/yoga poses
  • She squirms and moves all the time
  • We give her sponge baths on the bed and she absolutely hates them
  • She doesn’t mind tummy time and has already pushed herself up onto her elbows.
  • The doctor called her “advanced” – she’ll probably regret that:)

Had her newborn photoshoot at 10 days old. Here are our favorites:)
